Table Mountain: Everything You Need to Know
Cape Town's most famous landmark is also its most weather-dependent — here's how to give yourself the best chance of a clear-day summit.
Cableway or hike?
Most visitors take the rotating cable car, which climbs from the lower station on Tafelberg Road to the summit plateau in about five minutes, with the cabin floor rotating for 360-degree views on the way. For those who want to earn the view, Platteklip Gorge is the classic hiking route — a steep, well-marked path of roughly 2–3 hours up, with the option to ride the cableway back down. Fitter hikers sometimes combine it with other routes across the plateau; less experienced hikers should stick to the marked trail and check conditions before setting out, as the mountain has a real history of hikers getting into difficulty in poor visibility.
Booking tickets
Cableway tickets can be bought online in advance or at the lower station, but online booking is strongly recommended — it lets you pick a time slot, skip the longer walk-up queues, and (most importantly) check the day's operating status before you travel to the base station. Tickets are generally sold as one-way or return, with return being the standard choice for non-hikers.
Best time of day to go
Early morning typically offers the calmest wind and clearest visibility, before the south-easter picks up later in the day. Sunset slots are popular and beautiful but get busy and cold once the sun drops — bring a layer. Avoid the middle of the day in peak summer if you can, both for crowd levels and for the higher chance of the “tablecloth” cloud rolling in.
If it's closed
The cableway closes for high wind, rain, lightning and sometimes low cloud, and it can close with little notice — this is normal, not a sign of poor management, and happens even in the middle of summer. If your slot is cancelled, most operators offer a refund or rebooking. Build a spare day into your itinerary if Table Mountain is a must-do, and have a backup plan (the V&A Waterfront or a Winelands tasting both work well as alternatives).
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Table Mountain cableway take?
The ride itself takes about five minutes each way. Budget at least 1.5–2 hours total including queuing, the ride, and time at the summit.
Can you walk up Table Mountain?
Yes — Platteklip Gorge is the most direct hiking route, taking roughly 2–3 hours up. It's steep and should only be attempted in good weather with proper footwear and water.
