Best Areas to Stay in Cape Town
Cape Town is spread across several very different neighbourhoods. Picking the right base matters more here than in a compact city — here's how the main options compare.
V&A Waterfront
The most tourist-friendly base: walkable, safe to explore on foot day and night, with restaurants, shopping and boat departures (including Robben Island) on your doorstep. It's polished and a little corporate-feeling compared to the rest of the city, and you'll want transport to reach Table Mountain or the beaches. Good for first-timers and anyone who wants convenience over local character. Full guide: V&A Waterfront.
City Bowl
The city centre and surrounding neighbourhoods (including colourful Bo-Kaap) sit in the bowl formed by Table Mountain, Signal Hill and Lion's Head. It's central, walkable, full of restaurants and galleries, and close to the mountain cableway. Nightlife and a genuine city buzz come with more street noise and less beach access than the coastal areas.
Atlantic Seaboard (Camps Bay, Clifton, Sea Point)
Cape Town's glamorous coastline — white sand beaches backed by mountains, upscale restaurants, and some of the city's best sunsets. Camps Bay and Clifton are pricier and beach-focused; Sea Point offers similar coastal access with a longer promenade, more restaurant variety, and generally better value. Expect to rely on transport to reach the City Bowl and other sights. Full guide: Atlantic Seaboard.
Southern Suburbs
A leafy, residential alternative near Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden and the university, generally quieter, greener, and better value than the coast or City Bowl. It suits longer stays, families, and travellers who don't mind driving or using rideshare to reach the main sights. Full guide: Southern Suburbs.
