Why Constantia
Constantia's vineyards date back to the 1680s, making the area the historical root of South African winemaking — some estates here were producing internationally renowned dessert wines centuries before Stellenbosch or Franschhoek became known internationally. Being tucked into the Southern Suburbs, it's the closest proper wine estate experience to the city centre.
How it compares to Stellenbosch
Constantia is smaller and more compact than the main Winelands towns — fewer estates, less of a standalone “town” to wander, but far less driving. It suits travellers who want a wine estate lunch and a tasting or two without dedicating a full day, or who are short on time but don't want to skip the Winelands experience entirely.
