Signal Hill: The Easy-Access View
Signal Hill sits between Lion's Head and the City Bowl, and unlike its taller neighbour, most of it can be reached by car — making it the lowest-effort great view in the city.
Why it's different from Lion's Head
Where Lion's Head demands a 2–3 hour hike, Signal Hill's viewpoint is reachable by driving most of the way up and walking only the final short stretch — a genuinely different experience aimed at a different visitor. The view trades some of Lion's Head's drama for similar coverage: the City Bowl, the Atlantic Seaboard coastline, and Robben Island out in the bay.
The Noon Gun
Signal Hill is also home to the Noon Gun, a cannon fired daily (except Sundays) at noon — a tradition dating back over a century, originally used to help ships and residents set their clocks.
Who it suits
A good option for travellers who want a great Cape Town view without a strenuous hike, including families with young children, visitors with mobility considerations, or anyone short on time who still wants a proper sunset. It gets busy at sunset, similar to Lion's Head, so arrive with time to find parking.
