Muizenberg Guide
On the False Bay side of the peninsula, Muizenberg is Cape Town's surf capital — warmer, gentler water than the Atlantic side, and a row of famous Victorian bathing huts that anchor most photos of the town.
Why surfers love it
Muizenberg's long, gentle, sandy-bottomed waves make it the most beginner-friendly surf spot in the city, with numerous surf schools operating right on the beach. Water here is noticeably warmer than the Atlantic Seaboard, part of the reason False Bay generally beats the Atlantic side for swimming — see our beaches guide for the full comparison.
The bathing huts
Muizenberg's row of brightly painted wooden bathing huts, dating back over a century, is one of the most photographed spots in the city and a genuine piece of Cape Town's beach culture history, not just a staged backdrop.
The town itself
Muizenberg has a slightly bohemian, laid-back character with a growing cafe and surf-shop scene, distinct from the polish of the Atlantic Seaboard. It sits along the same False Bay stretch as Boulders Beach and Simon's Town, making it easy to combine into a False Bay coastal day.
